During his address, H.E. Alhameli reminisced about the significant milestones achieved since the beginning of diplomatic relations in 1994.

He underscored the enduring friendship and growing collaboration between the two nations, which continues to serve as a model for constructive international relations.

As 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the UAE and South Africa, this moment also coincides with South Africa celebrating three decades of democracy.

This dual commemorative event highlights the deep historical ties and shared aspirations for progress and prosperity.

Strengthening Economic and Strategic Relations

Nelia Barnard, a senior official from the South African government, delivered an impactful speech, highlighting the importance of the bilateral partnership.

Barnard stated: “This year marks a notable milestone as we celebrate thirty years of diplomatic relations with the UAE, coinciding with three decades of our democracy.

“These anniversaries affirm our shared commitment to nurturing a dynamic and prosperous partnership.

“The UAE’s timely recognition of democratic South Africa in 1994 laid the groundwork for a robust bilateral relationship.

“Over the years, high-level meetings, such as the recent discussions between President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi at the G20 Summit in Brazil, underscore the strategic importance of our collaboration.”

From an economic perspective, the UAE has become South Africa’s largest trading partner in the Middle East, with bilateral trade reaching R120 billion in 2023.

South African exports amounted to R47 billion, while imports from the UAE totaled ZAR 73 billion.

Noteworthy investments from UAE companies, including DP World’s acquisition of Imperial Logistics for R12.7 billion and AMEA Power’s USD180 million solar initiative in Limpopo, have fostered job creation and bolstered socioeconomic development.

Expanding Multilateral Cooperation

The UAE’s recent accession as a full BRICS member in January 2024 marks a significant milestone in global multilateralism.

The representative remarked: “South Africa has warmly embraced the UAE into BRICS and is confident that its inclusion will further strengthen the bloc’s inclusivity and collaborative spirit.”

The mutual dedication of both countries to dialogue, peace, and sustainable development reflects the robustness of their partnership.

Plans for the forthcoming fourth meeting of the Joint Committee for Cooperation in 2025 are expected to enhance collaboration across multiple sectors.

Innovation, Diplomacy, and Shared Vision

The UAE’s global leadership in innovation and scientific diplomacy was also highlighted, with both countries exploring opportunities in space exploration, renewable energy, and digital connectivity.

The representative reaffirmed a shared commitment to addressing critical global issues, such as climate change and peacebuilding efforts.

South Africa appreciates the UAE’s principled stance on regional matters, particularly regarding the Palestinian issue.

The representative reiterated South Africa’s support for a just and equitable two-state solution, aligned with international law, establishing East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

Celebrating Achievements

The event concluded in a festive spirit, with attendees enjoying a cultural celebration and a raffle that presented air tickets to two lucky winners.

This occasion illustrated the enduring friendship between South Africa and the UAE.

Together, they celebrated the UAE’s remarkable achievements over the past 53 years, while reinforcing a shared vision for a thriving and harmonious future.

On behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the government, and the people of South Africa, heartfelt congratulations were expressed to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the government, and the people of the UAE on this important occasion, as stated by Nelia Barnard.

Happy National Day, UAE.
