Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has delivered a strong message to Moroccan powerhouses Raja Club Athletic ahead of their clash in the CAF Champions League.
The Tshwane-based team recently achieved a 1-1 draw in their Champions League group stage match against AS FAR in Morocco over the weekend.
Former Stellenbosch striker Iqraam Rayners was the sole scorer for the Brazilians. Currently, Mngqithi’s squad occupies second place in the standings with two points from two matches, while group leaders AS FAR are leading with four points.
The Brazilians are scheduled to take on fellow Moroccan stronghold Raja in their third matchday this Sunday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Mngqithi warns Raja to brace themselves for a challenging encounter, emphasizing that his team becomes a tough contender when playing on home turf.
“This is yet another match that requires thorough analysis,” Mngqithi remarked.
“Nonetheless, I can assure you that home matches always pose a challenge for any visitor. We are currently focused on achieving victories, and I believe we’re in a strong position.
“Additionally, the draw between Raja and AS Maniema Union has benefited us in the standings. Although we would have preferred a win against AS FAR, in football, one must learn to accept the outcomes as they come.
“I am very pleased with my players’ performances, and I expect an even more robust display at home.”
In other news, the former Golden Arrows coach expressed hope for overcoming AS FAR in South Africa during the second round, assuming they maintain their recent form.
“It will be a different match; that’s a promise,” Mngqithi declared.
“If we can replicate our performance against AS FAR on their home ground, amidst the support of their passionate fans, I am confident we will achieve victory.”
This highly anticipated match is set for January 2025 and will be the final group stage game for both teams. Prior to that, the Brazilians will head to DR Congo to face AS Maniema Union.
