President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has revealed plans for the country to host a Formula One race.
F1 has not taken place in Africa since the final South African Grand Prix in 1993.
Max Verstappen received his trophy for clinching his fourth consecutive world title during a ceremony in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda.
Kagame addressed the audience at the event, speaking at the FIA’s General Assembly: “I am excited to officially declare that Rwanda is looking to revitalize racing in Africa by hosting a Formula One Grand Prix.”
“I extend my gratitude to (F1 CEO) Stefano Domenicali and the entire F1 team for the progress we have made in our discussions to date.”
“I assure you that we are pursuing this opportunity with the respect and commitment it deserves.”
“Together, we can create something we can all take pride in.”
Domenicali mentioned in August that Rwanda aspires to host a race at a permanent venue.
Reports suggest that the racetrack, to be crafted by a team led by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz from Austria, will be situated near a new international airport that is currently being developed 40 kilometers from Kigali.
Lewis Hamilton indicated in August that this is the perfect time for a comeback to Africa, and he is actively working with both Rwanda and South Africa to facilitate this.

The seven-time world champion stated, “The timing couldn’t be better. We can’t keep adding races in other regions while ignoring Africa, a continent that is often overlooked without receiving anything in return.”
“Hosting a Grand Prix in Africa would truly showcase the continent’s beauty and boost tourism and various opportunities. It’s time to acknowledge Africa.”
This week marks the inaugural instance of the FIA holding its general assemblies in Africa, where FIA’s Emirati President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Rwanda’s Sports Minister Richard Nyirihishema convened earlier in Kigali.
Ben Sulayem commented, “Conducting our meetings in Rwanda during such a pivotal time in the FIA’s calendar highlights the strength of this nation and its growing impact on motorsport.”
“We share foundational values and goals in important areas such as innovation, sustainability, and road safety, and I am eager for our continued collaboration.”
“The future of motorsport in Africa appears promising.”
Verstappen is also engaging in “community service” in Rwanda after an incident at a press conference during the Singapore Grand Prix in October.
This initiative includes the development of an FIA Affordable Cross Car, designed locally in Rwanda, in accordance with specifications provided by the governing body.
