The Johannesburg Regional Court has imposed five consecutive life sentences on 34-year-old Ashraf Hartley for the appalling rapes of his young relatives, who were between six and 12 years old, occurring in Bosmont, Johannesburg.
Sentence of the Rape Suspect
The court declared that the sentences would be served back-to-back. One of the victims disclosed Hartley’s offenses in a letter to her mother after attending sexual education classes at school, prompting an investigation led by Sergeant Masedi.

“Hartley was arrested and charged with four counts of rape and one charge of compelled rape. The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse by the accused, who entered the family through adoption at 11 months old,” noted Mjonondwane.
Over the course of his adulthood, Hartley victimized his young relatives from 2008 to 2021, using manipulation and coercion to maintain their silence.
“In one incident, he forced one victim to sexually assault his sister. Further evidence demonstrated a deliberate and systematic pattern of abuse, as Hartley misused his trusted position to exploit and harm his younger family members,” Mjonondwane added.
Consequences for Victims
During the trial, the victims had the opportunity to speak, and a victim impact statement highlighted their devastating loss of faith in those responsible for their protection.
The survivors of these attacks now face a daunting path towards regaining their self-esteem and confidence.
Prosecutor Lorraine Nel stated that the ramifications of these atrocious acts extend far beyond physical injury. The court acknowledged that each victim has been condemned to a lifetime of trauma due to the perpetrator’s actions.

“The emotional scars are profound, enduring, and surpass the narratives expressed within the victim impact statements,” asserted Nel.
The court also emphasized Hartley’s utter lack of remorse. In response to this harsh ruling, the NPA in Gauteng reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to addressing gender-based violence and advocating for more stringent penalties for offenders.
