Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has raised alarms over the recent vandalism at the SSG Substation in Centurion, which occurred this week, highlighting a troubling increase in attacks on substations in recent times.
In a statement released on Wednesday, (18 December 2024), Councillor Kholofelo Morodi, the MMC for Corporate and Shared Services overseeing Region 4, expressed: “I am deeply concerned about the rising incidents of vandalism affecting several substations in recent weeks.”
The vandalism at the SSG Substation in Centurion took place on Monday, (16 December 2024).
“This event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges we face in our mission to provide our communities with consistent and reliable power supply,” remarked MMC Morodi.
“The damages incurred at the SSG Substation have caused significant disruptions for our residents, impacting daily life and local businesses.”
“Acts of vandalism not only compromise the integrity of our infrastructure but also put additional strain on our resources as we work to restore services.”
“We recognize the serious impact these power outages have on our residents’ daily lives and are committed to addressing these issues with both urgency and accountability.”
“However, we cannot tackle this challenge in isolation.”
MMC Morodi stressed the importance of community involvement in safeguarding public infrastructure.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities,” stated MMC Morodi.
“By working together, we can prevent further instances of vandalism and protect our infrastructure.”
“We also want to assure the residents of Tshwane that we are taking robust steps to secure our infrastructure and minimize the chance of future incidents.”
MMC Morodi mentioned that this initiative forms part of the Executive Mayor’s 100-Day Action Plan, which focuses on enhancing security measures and boosting surveillance to deter criminal activity.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused to residents,” she added.
“Let us unite in our efforts to safeguard our community and adhere to the principles of accountability and transparency as we strive for dependable service delivery.”
