Craig Wright, who has long asserted that he is the creator of Bitcoin, was found in contempt of court and sentenced to a year in prison.
The Australian computer scientist received a 12-month jail sentence, which has been suspended for 24 months, after a U.K. judge ruled him guilty of contempt.
Earlier in March, a court determined that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic figure behind Bitcoin (BTC). This decision followed his £900 billion intellectual property claim, whereby he sought copyright ownership of the Bitcoin whitepaper and essential code repositories.
The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) countered Wright’s claims by suing him in the U.K. to clarify that he is not Satoshi. Notable members of the Bitcoin community, including Adam Back, the architect of the proof-of-work consensus model, provided testimony against Wright during the legal proceedings.
COPA emerged victorious in the case, and Wright was officially ruled “Not Satoshi” by the court, subsequently engaging in contempt of court as he attempted to claim Nakamoto’s identity.
As reported by the Guardian, Wright did not disclose his physical location during the sentencing of his jail term. He participated via a virtual meeting platform and indicated his intention to appeal the court’s decision.
