NICKY HENDERSON is poised to have Sir Gino make his fencing debut at Kempton, paving the way for Constitution Hill to target the Champion Hurdle.
Hendo has been deliberating the next steps for the four-year-old after his remarkable victory in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle last month.
In light of that performance, bookmakers have reduced his odds to 9-2 for the Champion Hurdle, although at the beginning of the season, his trainer was considering entering him in novice chasing events.
With Constitution Hill appearing fit and ready for the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day, Hendo is expected to return to the original plan next week.
Despite his hesitance to disclose details about Sir Gino recently, he expressed on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast today that ‘everything remains uncertain.’
However, sources indicate that the horse has schooled exceptionally well over fences at Seven Barrows this morning, with plans underway for the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase scheduled for December 27.
At present, Sir Gino is being offered at a best price of 6-1 for the Arkle Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Meanwhile, the six-time champion trainer delivered an encouraging update on Constitution Hill as he prepares for his return after a year-long absence.
He was found to be lame while training for the Fighting Fifth Hurdle last month, adding to a series of health struggles for the former champion.
Nonetheless, Hendo is optimistic that Constitution Hill will be ready for Kempton, where he might compete against Lossiemouth, with submissions for the Christmas Hurdle due tomorrow.
In his own words during the NLD: “We have a week left and more work to do, but everything is progressing well. I’m feeling very positive.
“He recovered quickly from his recent issue, so we didn’t lose much time.
“His training has been excellent, and he schooled recently, which has invigorated him. The fire is still burning.”
