Over 200 Christmas Babies Born in Gauteng and KZN

By midday on Christmas Day, a total of 231 babies were born in hospitals across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, marking a day filled with joy and celebration.

Gauteng Celebrates 184 Newborns

Healthcare facilities in Gauteng reported a total of 184 newborns, comprising 105 boys and 79 girls. Tembisa Hospital had the highest delivery rate, with 16 babies welcomed into the world. Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, conveyed her congratulations to the new parents while visiting various public health centers.

Nkomo-Ralehoko, alongside Deputy Home Affairs Minister Njabulo Nzuza and Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, celebrated the happy occasion with mothers at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital. They distributed gifts to the new mothers and underscored the significance of immunization.

“Congratulations to all the families. We urge parents to make sure their babies receive immunizations on schedule to safeguard them against diseases such as polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis, measles, and meningitis,” stated Nkomo-Ralehoko.

She added, “Immunization is offered free of charge at all public clinics and community healthcare centers in the province.”

Nzuza highlighted the importance of immediate birth registration, emphasizing, “Entry into the national population register starts with birth registration. Without it, children may face challenges in accessing services. To aid this process, we have established home affairs offices within health facilities.”

Zandile Mqumba, 38, was one of the mothers at Tembisa Hospital. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 12:12 am, making her the first delivery at the hospital on Christmas Day. She expressed gratitude for the gifts and valued the on-site birth registration, which enabled her child to receive a birth certificate right away.

The day also marked the official reopening of Tembisa Hospital’s renovated 60-bed female medical ward, which now features additional oxygen and suction points, improved ventilation, and a nurse call system.

KwaZulu-Natal Welcomes 47 Christmas Babies

In KwaZulu-Natal, 47 babies arrived by midday, including 21 boys and 26 girls. Premier Thami Ntuli and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi visited Victoria Mxenge Hospital in Durban to celebrate with the new parents.

Simelane-Mngadi pointed out that among the mothers were three 15-year-old girls. She congratulated them and encouraged all parents to prioritize their children’s health and well-being.

This Christmas, the miracle of new life brought joy to many, as hospitals across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal worked tirelessly to ensure safe deliveries and provide essential care to mothers and their newborns.
