Durban – The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma, has initiated measures to accelerate support for the residents of Masinenge Informal Settlement, which has suffered the destruction of at least 28 homes due to a fire.
This unfortunate event occurred in the early hours of Boxing Day, Thursday, 26 December 2024.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost their homes to the flames around 2 am today,” expressed MEC Duma.
Initial investigations indicate that an intoxicated person may have dozed off while preparing dinner.
The unattended stove then caught fire, leading to a rapid spread of flames that engulfed the structure and reached nearby homes.
Thankfully, no injuries or deaths have been reported.
Upon being informed of the calamity, MEC Duma quickly visited the Masinenge Informal Settlement to connect with the families affected by the fire.
He was accompanied by Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality’s Mayor, Cllr Zodwa Mzindle, as well as local Councillors and officials from Human Settlements.
“Regrettably, some family members of those whose homes were lost are currently on holiday,” noted MEC Duma.
“We are ensuring ongoing communication with the National Department of Human Settlements. Our thanks go to national Minister Thembi Simelane for assigning a senior manager to support a rapid response.”
The MEC confirmed that a team from the national department is working with dedicated teams from the provincial Department of Human Settlements, Ugu District, and Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.
To enhance support for the affected families, MEC Duma outlined the following actions:
- Expediting the profiling and verification of the victims, with 16 residents already confirmed;
- Delivering immediate relief such as temporary housing, warm blankets, food, and other essential items.
“We urge communities to be mindful of the fire hazards associated with cooking while consuming alcohol,” cautioned MEC Duma.
“We express our appreciation to the Fire & Rescue Teams from both municipalities, including Emergency Rescue Services, for their swift response in extinguishing the fire.”
