Johannesburg – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has voiced its concerns regarding audio-visual material circulating on various social media channels that depicts one of its employees traveling on the South African airline, FlySafair.
This regrettable event, captured by multiple passengers, occurred on a flight from Durban to Cape Town on Boxing Day.
In a statement issued on Saturday, December 28, 2024, the SABC expressed its dismay regarding the incident and reiterated its commitment to promoting the SABC values of respect and integrity in all staff interactions.
In the video, the staff member refers to the SABC and notes that the incident will be reported on SABC News.
“We would like to reiterate that SABC News functions in accordance with the Editorial Code and maintains its editorial independence, with all news-related decisions made within the Newsroom, free from interference by non-editorial staff,” the public broadcaster affirmed.
The SABC also stated that it will follow the appropriate internal procedures to address the actions of the staff member.
The conduct of the SABC employee has faced condemnation from the African National Congress (ANC).
In a statement released on Saturday, the ANC expressed that it “noted with disgust and disdain the behavior of a woman aboard a domestic flight who acted in an unruly and inappropriate manner while invoking the name of the ANC to justify her actions.”
The ANC emphasized that it “categorically distances itself from such behavior, which runs contrary to the values and principles of our movement.”
“Regardless of her association with the ANC, we firmly assert that no individual has the right to behave in such an unacceptable manner, particularly by misusing the esteemed name of the ANC.”
“We have initiated an investigation into her membership status.”
The SABC staff member has been identified on social media as Nobuntu Nobu Mkhize, who is reportedly a brand manager at Metro FM.
