Six Arrested and Firearms Seized After Police Shootout in Riverlea’s Illegal Mining Operation

Johannesburg – Authorities have detained six individuals believed to be involved in illegal mining activities in Riverlea, Langlaagte, following a gunfire exchange with law enforcement.

As per the Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the arrests occurred on Friday, (27 December 2024).

“Police seized unlicensed firearms and ammunition used by the suspects,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo reported.

The police had received intelligence regarding unlawful mining operations in Riverlea.

Members of the National Intervention Unit acted on this intelligence and initiated a search for the suspects.

“Upon reaching the targeted area, police discovered equipment linked to illegal mining activities,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo noted.

“While officers were in the process of confiscating the tools, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a shootout.”

The police apprehended two suspects who were in possession of two firearms: a rifle and a pistol, along with loaded magazines.

RECOVERED: One of the illegal firearms seized by police following the arrest of illegal miners in Riverlea.

Furthermore, four additional suspects were captured in the vicinity.

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo specified that the detainees are facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“Further investigations have uncovered that all suspects are in the country illegally,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo added.

The suspects are anticipated to make an appearance in court shortly.
