Addressing the Energy Crisis

Ramaphosa praised the advancements made in addressing South Africa’s energy challenges, highlighting Eskom’s integration of Unit 2 at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station into the national grid.

With Unit 1 also operational, Koeberg is expected to provide 5% of the country’s electricity needs, aiding in the mitigation of the load shedding crisis.

“We are committed to substantial new investments in electricity generation and striving towards a competitive electricity market,” Ramaphosa remarked.

Global and Regional Solidarity

The president discussed international and regional issues, reaffirming South Africa’s support for victims of oppression.

  • Middle East Conflict: “We maintain our solidarity with the Palestinian people,” Ramaphosa noted, calling for an end to hostilities and the release of hostages in Gaza.
  • Mozambique Unrest: He also expressed concern regarding political unrest in neighboring Mozambique, emphasizing the need for regional cooperation.

While recognizing advancements, Ramaphosa extended his condolences for the year’s tragedies, including the loss of children in Soweto and beyond due to tainted food.
