Johannesburg – The City of Ekurhuleni is currently looking into the cause of the power outage that occurred on Thursday night, which affected the municipality including O.R. Tambo International Airport.
On Friday, (3 January 2025), the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) assured travelers that O.R. Tambo International Airport remains fully operational despite a brief power interruption impacting the Ekurhuleni Metro area.
ACSA reported that the power outage, which happened on Thursday, (2 January 2025), around 19:20, was the result of a trip in the municipal grid.
“The local municipality is in the process of determining the cause of the outage,” the airports company stated.
“ACSA is not accountable for identifying the root of the problem, as the power failure lies outside our control.”
“We wish to emphasize that all critical airport functions, including terminals, airfield operations, and cargo handling, are operating without any interruptions.”
ACSA mentioned that the airport’s backup generators were activated within 15 seconds of the outage, ensuring that airport operations continued smoothly.
“All generators have been thoroughly tested and are fully operational,” confirmed ACSA.
“Cargo operations are running efficiently, with backup power systems in place to prevent any delays or disruptions.
“ACSA is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
“Passengers are encouraged to stay updated with their airlines regarding any changes to flight schedules.”
For live flight updates, passengers can also download the ACSA Mobile App.
“We appreciate our passengers’ understanding and patience during this time,” ACSA expressed.
