Former Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz is reportedly being considered for the head coaching role of Tunisia’s national football team.
The 71-year-old tactician has been unaffiliated with any club since departing Qatar in December 2023. He is seen as a likely replacement for Kais Yakoubi, who managed the team during their defeat to Gambia in a qualifier for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite this setback, Tunisia has secured a spot in the AFCON finals, which are set to take place in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026. Nonetheless, the 2004 AFCON champions are contemplating modifications to their coaching staff.
Queiroz possesses experience in North African football, having previously managed Egypt from September 2021 to April 2022, leading them to the AFCON final in 2022, where they lost to Senegal in a penalty shootout.
He also guided the Iran national team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they encountered losses against England (6-2) and the USA, but secured a win over Wales (2-0) in the group stage, which ultimately saw them eliminated.
The coach, originally from Mozambique, has a varied coaching career that includes stints in Colombia, an assistant role at Manchester United, and management experiences in Saudi Arabia and Real Madrid.
He also previously guided Bafana Bafana to the quarterfinals of the 2002 AFCON, where they were eliminated by Mali.
Moreover, Queiroz played a pivotal role in helping Portugal reach the round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where they were defeated by the eventual champions, Spain.
If appointed by Tunisia, Queiroz’s debut match would be an away encounter against Liberia in the preliminary rounds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the qualifiers resuming in March.
