Cape Town – The Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, has declared that disciplinary action will be pursued against senior party members Tony Yengeni and Obed Bapela for comments that undermine the party’s integrity.
During a press conference on Monday, January 6, 2025, prior to the upcoming “ANC January 8 statement” commemoration, Mbalula addressed Yengeni’s recent statements, which were at odds with the ANC’s official positions.
In response to Yengeni’s disparaging remarks regarding the ANC and the Government of National Unity, Mbalula remarked: “Tony Yengeni is simply a political Casanova.”
He further stated: “He is spreading ambiguous political views that resonate only with a minimal faction of dissenters against the ANC.
“He will face charges… I have informed him via SMS… I have reached out to him… we will move forward with charges… we will bring him before the ANC’s disciplinary body.”
The ANC Secretary General pointed out that Yengeni’s social media activity contradicts the party’s principles and lends support to the uMkhonto weSizwe Party.
Mbalula also issued a warning to other ANC executives who post critical remarks about the party’s leadership online.
“They too will soon be addressed,” he cautioned.
Mbalula also mentioned that senior party member Bapela will face charges related to his conduct during a visit to Morocco, which went against ANC policies.
“Discipline is vital,” Mbalula stressed.
The ANC January 8 statement will be presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
