Lehlohonolo Seema, head coach of Sekhukhune United, has shed light on the unexpected absence of Sipho Mbule from the squad that faced Polokwane City during the recent Limpopo derby at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium this past Sunday.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams finding the net: Raymond Daniels scored his first goal for Rise and Shine in the 35th minute, quickly followed by Tresor Tshibwabwa equalizing for the visitors just six minutes later.
The 26-year-old midfielder joined Babina Noko on a season-long loan from the reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, at the start of the current season, seeking more game time after finding it challenging to secure a regular starting role at Chloorkop.
Since his arrival, Mbule has made seven appearances under Seema’s guidance, scoring once. However, his omission from the derby prompted the Sekhukhune coach to clarify his absence from the lineup.
“I must rotate my squad to enhance team dynamics. Analyzing my upcoming schedule, it’s evident that some players need rest, and considering [Sipho] Mbule hasn’t been getting consistent playtime at his previous club,” Seema explained.
“Additionally, we brought in [Katlego] Otladisa for his debut, and [Andy] Boyeli is also being considered. We’re focusing on giving [Chibuike] Ohizu some playing opportunities as he has been out for a while. Our aim is to rotate players and ensure everyone gets a chance to participate whenever possible.
“The months ahead in January and February are going to be particularly challenging, so we’re strategically managing our players. If anyone picks up a minor injury, we prefer to take precautionary measures and follow the medical team’s recommendations rather than taking unnecessary risks.
“To answer your question, both Mbule and Boyeli were physically fit but were dealing with minor injuries, so we opted to keep them out as a precaution,” stated the former Orlando Pirates captain.
Seema, now in his second stint at the club, also spoke about the importance of competition for places in the squad, highlighting that all players must vie for their spots amidst the fierce selection process.
“We are dedicated to building a strong team, and the players are aware that they must compete. Both [Keletso] Sifama and [Jamie] Webber remain part of Sekhukhune United and are still registered with us,” stressed the Lesotho-born coach.
“Players must fight for their positions. Some, like [Njabulo] Ngcobo, are sidelined due to injury, but there are others who are eager for their chance to shine.
“We are fortunate to have a well-rounded squad that offers us various selection options. Players are chosen based on merit, and now everyone understands that they need to work hard to be selected.”
Sekhukhune United currently occupies the fourth position in the Betway Premiership table and will be back in action against AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday. Babina Noko last celebrated a league victory over Usuthu back in October 2021.
