Maziv Appoints Executive from Openserve

Maziv, the parent entity overseeing the fibre operators Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa (DFA), has appointed Phila Dube as the new group chief commercial officer.

Dube’s appointment coincides with Maziv and Vodacom’s plans to contest a Competition Tribunal ruling that inhibits Vodacom’s co-controlling stake in the company, following the Competition Commission’s prior approval of Vodacom and Remgro’s joint acquisition of a significant interest in Maziv.

With 26 years of expertise at Telkom, where he served as the chief commercial officer at Openserve, Dube is anticipated to play a vital role in steering Maziv’s commercial strategies amid increased competition in the fibre industry.

“Phila’s extensive industry experience and deep understanding of customer needs align perfectly with our vision for the future. He is the ideal candidate to enhance our commercial strategies across our consumer, enterprise, and carrier brands,” stated Maziv CEO Dietlof Mare.

Dube’s professional journey includes significant initiatives, such as a prominent managed dark fibre contract and the doubling of Openserve’s fibre broadband subscriber base. His expertise spans commercial strategy, business innovation, and product development.

Reflecting on his shift from finance to strategy, Dube remarked, “I always wanted to be at the forefront where decisions are made.”

At Maziv, he aims to synchronize the company’s services with customer expectations. “My priority is to deeply understand our enterprise, carrier, and mass-market clients and to explore how we can help them achieve their strategic goals,” he mentioned.

Dube emphasized the importance of advancing digital literacy and adoption, likening fibre connectivity to an essential need. “Until fibre is seen as a necessity, much like bread, widespread adoption will remain a challenge,” he observed.
