Johannesburg – The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has launched an inquiry into complaints regarding overbooking practices involving FlySafair.
The NCC has recognized the concerns that have emerged in the media, particularly across social media, relating to allegations of FlySafair’s overbooking and/or overselling.
Consequently, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the NCC announced the commencement of an investigation into FlySafair’s overbooking and/or overselling practices to assess their compliance with the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (CPA), notably sections 19(2)(a), 22(1)(b), 41(1)(a), 47, and 48(1)(b).
The NCC has initiated contact with the airline and requested relevant information to kickstart the investigation.
Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu stated: “In light of the gravity of the allegations, the NCC will treat this investigation with urgency.”
“Consumers who have experienced issues related to this matter are urged to come forward and provide any information that could assist the investigation.”
FlySafair, which was recently named the most punctual airline in Africa and the Middle East for the second consecutive year by Cirium in their On-Time Performance Review, was not available for comment before the publication of this article.
