This morning, police apprehended four individuals, including a grandson of the late former South African president Nelson Mandela, after a suspected hijacked vehicle was found at Mandela’s historic Houghton residence.

According to initial police reports, the stolen vehicle was brought to the Houghton estate while the vehicle’s original driver was still inside. While details about the driver’s condition are not fully clear, he is confirmed to be at an Ekurhuleni police station preparing to file a report.
A Home in Decline
Sadly, the Houghton residence, once a symbol of Mandela’s legacy, has fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years, tarnishing the memory of the revered leader.
Reports indicate that the property has deteriorated since Mandela’s grandchildren vacated the premises after the City of Johannesburg cut off electricity services due to mounting unpaid municipal bills, which climbed from R15,000 to R50,000 each month.
Mbuso Mandela, one of Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren, has publicly condemned the trustees of the Nelson Mandela Trust, accusing them of neglecting the estate and failing to act in the family’s best interests.

“There appears to be considerable collusion between the trustees and the estate executor,” remarked Mbuso. “It is well-known that trust board members receive stipends for managing the trust. I suspect they are working together to avoid maintaining the house.”
Efforts to Preserve Mandela’s Legacy
Recently, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi committed to revitalizing the historic residence, recognizing its significance as a key part of Mandela’s legacy. Additionally, philanthropist Collen Mashawana, through his foundation, has proposed to finance restoration efforts, indicating a positive development in the pursuit of preserving this iconic home.

The four individuals arrested at the residence, including Mandela’s grandson, are now facing charges of hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. An unlicensed firearm was also found at the scene, although police have yet to determine any connection to the crime.
This arrest raises serious concerns regarding security and the safeguarding of Mandela’s heritage, as what was once a prestigious residence finds itself at the center of both controversy and restoration efforts.
Authorities continue their investigation, with more updates expected in the coming days.
