Johannesburg – The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has arrested a group of suspected criminals aged between 26 and 38 years, seizing unlicensed firearms and live ammunition in Daveyton, Benoni.
On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at around 09:30, officers from the EMPD’s Eastern Region Task Team apprehended four male suspects.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the arrest was initiated after EMPD officers received information regarding a gang traveling in a white Toyota Avanza with fake registration plates.
This gang was reportedly creating disturbances for the residents of the Mina Nawe informal settlement.
“The officers initiated a manhunt and located the vehicle with four individuals, including the driver, at the junction of Buffalo and Brazil Road in Mayfield,” stated the City.
“Upon conducting standard checks on the vehicle and its passengers, it was found that the driver lacked a valid driver’s license and the vehicle’s [license] disc was counterfeit.
“The officers then searched all occupants and the vehicle, discovering two unlicensed 9mm firearms with scratched-out serial numbers, along with seven live rounds,” they elaborated.
The suspects were then taken into custody and transported to Putfontein Police Station.
“Further investigations are ongoing to assess the potential for additional charges against the four individuals,” the City stated.
