Kwaito Icon Doc Shebeleza Dies: Minister Gayton McKenzie Calls It a Significant Loss for South Africa

Pretoria – Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed that the death of the legendary Kwaito artist Victor “Doc Shebeleza” Bogopane is a significant loss not only for South Africa but also for the wider music community.

Doc Shebeleza, who had been facing health challenges, tragically passed away earlier today (Thursday, 9 January 2025), at the age of 51.

Born in 1973 in Soweto, Doc Shebeleza grew up in a family that valued cultural expression.

From a young age, he absorbed a variety of musical influences, ranging from kwaito to traditional South African music, which greatly influenced his artistic journey.

He burst onto the scene in 1995 with his debut album, Shebeleza, featuring the unforgettable hit Ghets Ghetsa.

This was followed by his album S’kumfete, which included another well-loved track of the same name.

Over his career, he solidified his legacy with three more albums: Tiger (1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).

In acknowledgment of his remarkable contributions to the genre, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards.

His influence extended beyond his own music; rapper Cassper Nyovest’s tribute song Doc Shebeleza celebrated his lifestyle and impact.

Doc Shebeleza also collaborated with Cassper on the track Monate So, showcasing the admiration that bridged generations of artists.

After retiring from music, Doc Shebeleza dedicated himself to philanthropy.

He founded the non-profit organization AMAHA (African Musicians Against HIV/AIDS), focusing on social initiatives for underprivileged communities.

Through AMAHA, he played a crucial role in constructing homes for those in need, distributing wheelchairs, and partnering with other legendary artists to improve community welfare.

“His dedication to helping others was a pivotal aspect of his life’s work until his untimely demise,” Minister McKenzie remarked.

Recently, Doc Shebeleza faced health complications, requiring hospital stays on two occasions last year before his unfortunate passing today.

“On behalf of the Ministry, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the numerous fans whose lives he touched,” stated Minister McKenzie.

“South Africa has lost not just a musical legend but also a compassionate individual whose influence on our cultural framework and community development will be forever appreciated.

“His music, laughter, and legacy will continue to resonate in our hearts.

“Rest in power, Victor ‘Doc Shebeleza’ Bogopane.”

Meanwhile, Gauteng Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation MEC Matome Chiloane shared his profound sadness over Doc Shebeleza’s death.

“Gauteng grieves the loss of Doc Shebeleza, especially following the recent passing of fellow artist Winnie Khumalo,” noted MEC Chiloane.

“Shebeleza’s influence in the Kwaito genre was tremendous and will continue to inspire both emerging and established artists.

“We will also honor him for his charitable endeavors in empowering and supporting artists through his organization, AMAHA.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bogopane family, friends, and all who loved his music.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
