Johannesburg – Fuel providers have implemented risk management strategies to ensure a consistent jet fuel supply to O.R. Tambo International Airport following a fire incident at their refinery.
The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) reported that the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa has notified them that National Petroleum Refiners SA (NATREF) is taking proactive measures to avoid any jet fuel supply disruptions.
The fire took place on 4 January 2025.
The Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) impacted by the fire is projected to resume operations by 21 February 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 12 January 2025, ACSA expressed satisfaction in confirming they possess adequate reserves to ensure the availability of jet fuel at O.R. Tambo International Airport for up to eight days, until 20 January 2025.
Fuel suppliers are preparing to implement the following risk mitigation measures:
- Scheduled Fuel Deliveries: A shipment of 17,000m³ of jet fuel is expected to reach O.R. Tambo International Airport by Sunday, 12 January 2025.
- Pipeline Injection: A scheduled injection of 31,000m³ from Durban is set for 14 January 2025, with anticipated delivery to O.R. Tambo International Airport by 27 January 2025.
- Increased Rail Deliveries: Rail deliveries from Durban and Matola (Mozambique) are being prioritized, with additional capacity allocated to meet the demand for jet fuel.
- Alternative Fuel Sourcing: Fuel will be obtained from other airports, alongside direct injections to NATREF.
“Immediate actions and risk mitigation strategies are crucial to address the expected jet fuel shortage at O.R. Tambo International Airport between 20 January and the anticipated delivery date of 27 January 2025,” stated ACSA.
The Fuel Industry Association of Southern Africa and NATREF are collaborating with industry partners, including ACSA, to formulate solutions by Tuesday, 14 January 2025.
“The main goal is to ensure the ongoing availability of jet fuel at O.R. Tambo International Airport,” ACSA stated.
“Airlines, passengers, and all stakeholders can be assured that all necessary actions are being undertaken to maintain normal airport operations and guarantee a reliable fuel supply.”
“ACSA remains committed to transparent communication and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
