
Stilfontein – On Tuesday afternoon, at least 118 illegal miners were rescued from an abandoned shaft in Stilfontein, North West, as authorities took action.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the spokesperson for the SA Police Service, reported the unsettling discovery of 27 bodies that had been retrieved.
“A total of 83 illegal miners have been successfully saved… 56 of them are alive… 27 have been confirmed deceased,” Brigadier Mathe revealed.
On the first day of the rescue operation on Monday, 35 illegal miners were extracted, with nine of them confirmed dead.

Brigadier Mathe also mentioned: “Today’s operation will continue until 22:00.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe visited the Stilfontein site.
