Marcel Koller, head coach of Al Ahly, emphasizes that their primary goal is to achieve a win against Orlando Pirates as they strive to take the lead in Group C ahead of their CAF Champions League clash at Cairo International Stadium this Saturday (18:00).
Even though both teams have already secured their spots in the quarterfinals, the competition for supremacy is about to begin in what is expected to be an exciting match, especially since their previous encounter ended in a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium.
Currently, Jose Riveiro’s side holds the top position in the group with 11 points, where a draw would be sufficient to maintain their lead. On the other hand, the Egyptian giants are in second place with 10 points and need a victory to surpass the Buccaneers.
However, the Swiss coach acknowledges that clinching all three points in Cairo against a team that remains unbeaten in the group will be a significant challenge, even as he stays optimistic about his team’s prospects.
“I am hopeful about our chances for a successful match, yet I understand it will be a tough battle as the opponents have been outstanding and are currently leading the group. They put up a strong performance on their home turf in the first leg,” Koller stated.
While being mindful of the threat from the Sea Robbers, Koller expresses that their ambition is to unseat the Pirates and assert their dominance in the group as they head toward the knockout rounds—a feat they have achieved only once in their last five seasons.
“Our objective is to win and claim the top position in the group, which is undoubtedly challenging. Nevertheless, we are thoroughly prepared, and our well-balanced team is capable of compensating for any absences,” remarked the two-time CAF Champions League winner.
The current champions of Africa are gearing up to welcome back key player Emam Ashour, who has netted six goals in his last three matches, along with Wessam Abou Ali, who is recovering from minor injuries, as they aim to secure three consecutive continental titles.
“Although we’re dealing with significant injuries, the quality of our players makes up for those who are unavailable, and anyone who takes to the field has a chance to showcase their talent. The match will not be easy for us, especially with younger or less experienced players,” Koller elaborated.
“It’s premature to discuss our chances of winning the championship, but our victories thus far indicate that we are on a positive trajectory. We have won the title twice and are striving for a third consecutive trophy, but this doesn’t imply our opponents have fewer chances.”
The Soweto giants will draw motivation from their impressive recent 4-3 victory during their last visit to Cairo. Historically, the Pirates have faced Al Ahly seven times, achieving two wins, three draws, and one loss.
