South Africa is set to introduce an exciting new sport: the African Biathlon. Announced today by the Nedbank Running Club, the largest running initiative in South Africa, this program aims to inspire South Africans to adopt an active lifestyle by integrating culture and excitement into the running journey.
Traditionally, the Biathlon is an Olympic event that merges cross-country skiing with rifle shooting—activities that aren’t particularly suitable for our warm weather. The African Biathlon reinterprets this concept to embody the vibrant spirit of Mzansi.
The African Biathlon features two segments. The first segment is a 5km run, designed to be inclusive for runners of all experience levels. Following the run, participants can take part in a “carrot” activity that fosters engagement. These activities can vary from socializing over coffee, enjoying local art, tasting wines, to even attending a party. Crucially, the choice lies with the participants, ensuring that each African Biathlon is a true reflection of the diverse interests of its attendees.
Research shows that 77% of local runners desire running communities within their neighborhoods. The African Biathlon aims to meet this demand by blending fitness with community involvement through shared passions.
“Our mission is to nurture a new kind of running culture,” said Edward Mothibi, Comrades Marathon champion and member of Nedbank Running Club. “The African Biathlon transcends fitness; it’s a celebration of our culture. It’s about running, connecting, and cherishing time together.”
The inaugural African Biathlon is set to take place in Johannesburg from February to March 2025, in partnership with prominent community running groups such as Benchwarmers Running Club, Social Running Club, and Vault Running Club, ensuring a community-driven approach.
Each event will seamlessly combine a 5km run with engaging activities afterward in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
The running community will have an active role in shaping the format of the African Biathlon. Participants will be able to select their preferred post-run activities, making this initiative a genuine representation of South Africa’s creativity, diversity, and lively culture.
“Nedbank is dedicated to improving banking efficiency for our clients, allowing them to concentrate on what truly matters—cherishing moments with their loved ones,” states Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs. “The African Biathlon is more than just a fitness program; it’s a celebration of community and culture. For those embarking on new fitness journeys this year, it offers a refreshing and enjoyable way to stay motivated while having fun.”
