Players and supporters of ARSENAL are furious after the surprising red card given to Myles Lewis-Skelly.
The 18-year-old received a red card for a foul on Wolves player Matt Doherty right before the halftime break.
After clearing a corner taken by the Gunners, the home side aimed to initiate a counter-attack.
Doherty surged forward with the ball and was deliberately brought down by Lewis-Skelly.
Although many expected a yellow card, referee Michael Oliver chose to show a red card instead.
Immediately, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel approached the referee to express their dissatisfaction.
Their protests were soon joined by William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice, who displayed their frustration with exaggerated gestures.
Following a VAR review, the officials confirmed the original decision, resulting in Lewis-Skelly’s reluctant exit from the pitch.
He appeared bewildered as he walked down the tunnel, arguing with the fourth official on his way out.
Manager Mikel Arteta also displayed discontent but urged his squad to maintain their composure.
The Premier League later released a statement clarifying the red card, noting: “The referee’s choice to issue a red card to Lewis-Skelly was inspected and validated by VAR, which classified his action as serious foul play.”
BBC presenter Mark Chapman referred to the decision as “absurd and illogical, especially for one of our leading referees.”
Arsenal fans expressed their anger, with one commenting: “I don’t say this lightly, but that red card for Lewis-Skelly is the most shocking decision I’ve ever seen in a football match.”
“I’m completely taken aback that VAR backed this. It should have been a simple yellow card to halt the counter-attack.”
