Moloto – At least four Putco depots in Mpumalanga have been targeted by arsonists, leading to the destruction of up to 47 buses.
“Putco regrets to inform about the incidents of arson at four of its depots in Mpumalanga,” said Putco spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu early on Tuesday, (28 January 2025).
“Initial reports indicate that on Monday evening, (27 January 2025), an unidentified group of attackers ambushed and restrained security personnel at the Moloto depot before setting buses ablaze and firing shots on the premises.
“This brutal episode resulted in injuries to two employees—one suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while another was hit on the head with a chair.”
Xulu reported that the destruction persisted throughout the night, with additional depots also experiencing buses being set on fire.
In total, at least 47 buses were charred across the four Putco depots located at
Moloto, Wolwekraal, Siyabushwa, and Vaalbank.
“Despite these events, Putco’s buses continue to operate in the affected areas under enhanced security protocols,” Xulu emphasized.
“The company is fully cooperating with law enforcement in the current investigations.”
No arrests have been made thus far, but the police are actively pursuing leads.
