Johannesburg – Volvo Car South Africa has announced a recall for its XC90 model due to a detected potential software malfunction in the brake control module.
The XC90 was first available for sale in South Africa in January 2023.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) revealed that Volvo Car South Africa alerted them regarding a possible software issue in the brake control module for the XC90, which became available for purchase in January 2023.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the NCC updated information about three Volvo Car South Africa models.
“The supplier informed the NCC on January 31, 2025, that they are recalling the following models: XC90 sold from January 20, 2023, XC90 sold from October 29, 2024, and XC40 MY2024, available for sale from January 24, 2024,” the statement noted.
“Volvo Car South Africa has reported to the NCC that their investigations indicated a potential software failure in the brake control module of the XC90 model, available for sale in January 2023.”
According to Volvo Car South Africa, “In rare occurrences, this may lead to a loss of braking support function.”
The XC90 sold from October 29, 2024, is being recalled due to a connecting rod between the brake pedal and brake booster that may not have been assembled according to manufacturing standards. If the rod detaches, the brake pedal will function incorrectly.
The XC40 MY2024 model has identified issues with the turn indicator system.
This issue, as noted by Volvo Car South Africa, could “in rare cases cause a temporary loss of functionality for the left rear turn indicator.”
Owners of these vehicles are strongly advised to contact the supplier.

Cape Herb and Spice Recalls
In a separate matter, Cape Herb and Spice notified the NCC on January 30, 2025, about the recall of various products manufactured between September 2023 and May 2024.

The affected products consist of Cape Herb and Spice Chilli & Garlic Seasoning, Cape Herb and Spice Black Peppercorns, Cape Herb and Spice Pink Salt, Cape Herb and Spice Salt & Pepper, Cape Herb and Spice Sea Salt, Cape Herb and Spice Seasoned Salt, and Cape Herb and Spice Sweet & Smoky BBQ.
The supplier informed the NCC of reports regarding the grinder mechanism breaking during use, which could potentially result in a hard plastic piece being released from the grinder.
The NCC advises consumers who possess these spices to stop using them immediately and return them to the supplier or point of purchase for a full refund.
Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu stated: “The NCC urges suppliers of these products to take all necessary measures to ensure consumers are informed about these recalls and that suitable remedies are provided to the affected consumers.”
