Pretoria – On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 26, 2025, three people suffered from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a building at the intersection of Marais Street and Hay Street in Brooklyn.
The Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) received the report of the fire around 12:45.
In response, the ECC quickly dispatched firefighting units from Hatfield Fire Station, Central Fire Station, Hazelwood Fire Station, and Silverton Fire Station to the location.
The response included two fire engines, a water tanker, an industrial pumper, a ladder truck, a district commander’s vehicle, and a video unit.
Upon arrival, the firefighters found that an apartment on the top floor of the three-story building was fully engulfed in flames.
The fire was rapidly spreading through the ceiling to neighboring apartments, prompting the firefighters to establish incident command and begin firefighting efforts immediately.
Thanks to the swift actions of the firefighters, the blaze was contained to the affected apartment, preventing additional damage to nearby structures.
Emergency Medical Services from Gauteng Province, along with the Tshwane Metro Police Department and various private emergency medical teams, were on hand to assist with managing the situation.
The fire was fully extinguished by around 13:47, and damping down operations continued thereafter.
Three individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation and were transported to local hospitals by private ambulance services.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
