
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has condemned the appalling killing of a Spotted Eagle Owl at the Sea Point Promenade.
This unfortunate incident occurred on the night of 16 February 2025, as nature lovers assembled to enjoy a peaceful sunset stroll along Sunset Beach.

Witnesses described how the beautiful owl landed gracefully on the promenade barrier, winning the admiration of many.
Out of nowhere, a homeless man emerged from the shadows, swinging a stick, and brutally attacked the owl, resulting in its death.
The violence of this incident was severe, breaking nearly every bone in the owl’s body and leaving it with no chance of survival.
SPCA Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse was alerted to this horrific event after a bystander posted about it on Facebook.

With the assistance of the Sea Point CID, the suspect was identified and taken into custody on 22 February 2025.

The offender was then transferred to the Sea Point SAPS, where they faced charges under the Animals Protection Act.

Pieterse criticized the senseless killing, urging the community to remain vigilant against animal cruelty.
