Update: Vaal Dam Nears Full Capacity as Authorities Keep Watch on Conditions

As the Vaal Dam approaches full capacity, authorities are closely monitoring its water levels to ensure safety and effective management. The Department of Water and Sanitation has reported that the dam is nearing 100% capacity.

The dam’s water level has increased significantly to 91.8%, marking a notable improvement from earlier this year when it fell below 30%.

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, has reassured the public that the sluice gates of the dam are functioning properly, and any water releases will be conducted following safety protocols.

“We must prevent the dam from overflowing, which can lead to disastrous consequences. However, the dam’s structure is stable. If there’s a need to release water to maintain safe levels, we will notify affected communities in advance,” Majodina stated.

She reminded residents that it takes approximately three days for released water to reach Gauteng, urging them to stay calm and vigilant.

Majodina also addressed concerns regarding potential water shortages, stating that transfers from the Sterkfontein Dam would only be considered if the Vaal Dam’s levels dropped below 18%.

“During the anxiety surrounding water shortages, I encouraged residents to keep calm. There is enough water available, but it is important to use it wisely and address non-revenue water losses,” she added.

“The Vaal Dam features a controlled release system that manages excess water through sluice gates, ensuring strategic overflow management and reducing flooding risks downstream,” Swart elaborated.

However, with no significant rainfall expected soon, Swart emphasized the importance of careful water management.
