Coach Manqoba Mngqithi has returned to Lamontville Golden Arrows, reassuring club chairperson Mato Madlala of his dedication to putting forth his best effort, which has helped to ease her concerns.
Mngqithi’s reappointment took place last week as the Durban-based club has struggled, failing to secure a victory in their last five matches across all competitions. They currently sit just above the relegation zone, with 21 points from 17 games, placed 11th on the league table.
His first match back in charge concluded in a draw against his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns, on Wednesday. Mngqithi acknowledged that he had only led two training sessions with the team prior to the match. Nevertheless, this was enough to secure a point against the formidable Sundowns team, a club he significantly developed before leaving in December, when Miguel Cardoso took over.
“The difference between my previous role and this one is that Sisi Mato understands my approach better than almost anyone else,” Mngqithi remarked.
“Our relationship goes beyond the usual boss-coach dynamic. Even during my time at Sundowns, I provided support whenever I could.

“Thus, our bond transcends mere aspirations; it is focused on enhancing this team. She can be confident that I am enthusiastic about my work and genuinely enjoy my responsibilities.
“I am fully committed to her club. She knows that there is no question of my dedication when I am present, as I aim to give my all, which is usually more than enough.”
Now entering his third term with the Arrows, Mngqithi’s initial appointment was in January 2007 when the club was in a relegation battle. He skillfully led the team to a 12th-place finish in the 2006/07 season.
During his first full season, the Arrows narrowly missed qualifying for the top eight, ending in ninth place. The 2008/09 season saw improved performance, resulting in a notable fifth-place finish and a spot in the MTN8.
The Arrows achieved a significant milestone in the MTN8, defeating Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) with a remarkable 6-0 win at Orlando Stadium. This remains the largest margin of victory in a domestic cup final during the PSL era and stands as Arrows’ only major trophy to date.
However, in recent seasons, their cup performances have not met expectations. Whether Mngqithi can replicate his initial success remains to be seen.
