A heartbreaking and unusual incident took place in Springs, Ekurhuleni, where a mortuary vehicle carrying a deceased individual collided with a tree and ignited, leading to the tragic deaths of both the driver and a passenger.

Zweli Dlamini, the spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, confirmed that officers from the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) responded to the scene on Clydesdale Road on Thursday.

“Upon arrival, the officers discovered that emergency personnel were already on the scene, and the mortuary vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, with the driver still inside,” Dlamini reported.
The second victim, a passenger, was located on the ground next to a large fallen tree. Paramedics declared both individuals dead at the location.
Superstitions or Coincidental Timing?
According to initial reports, the mortuary vehicle had just collected a body from the hospital when the passenger requested a detour to the site of the deceased’s passing, believed to be a ritual to “escort his spirit home.”
However, during this detour, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the crash into the tree and the subsequent fire.
As emergency services worked to secure the area, investigators have not ruled out possible causes such as speeding, mechanical failures, or other external factors.
