South African icon Siphiwe Tshabalala has been selected to join the inaugural FIFA Players Executive Programme.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino extended his congratulations to Tshabalala in a letter, sharing his excitement about the chance to engage with him and gain his perspective on upcoming changes in the sport that will undoubtedly influence its future.
“I am excited to be part of the first-ever Players Executive Programme. Proud to be a FIFA student,” Tshabalala posted on his social media platforms.
Tshabalala, affectionately known as “Shabba,” rose to international prominence after netting the opening goal for Bafana Bafana against Mexico at the 2010 FIFA World Cup held at FNB Stadium, executing a stunning strike with his powerful left foot following a quick one-two exchange.
Unfortunately, Bafana Bafana was unable to advance beyond the group stage of the World Cup, making them the first host nation to fail to reach the knockout rounds at that time. This was echoed by Qatar, which also did not progress while hosting the tournament in 2022.

Tshabalala, who was named the 2010 SAFA Footballer of the Year, earned 89 caps for the national team (70 starts and 19 as a substitute), scoring 12 goals for Bafana Bafana. Additionally, he was awarded the Kaizer Chiefs Player of the Season three times: in 2008/2009, 2011/2012, and 2016/2017.
Furthermore, “Shabba” holds the record for the most appearances in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates since the PSL was established in 1996. The 40-year-old participated in 31 Derbies, scoring four goals. His debut in the Derby came on 24 November 2007, resulting in a 2-2 draw away.
He enjoyed a prosperous tenure at Kaizer Chiefs, capturing several titles, including two league championships (2012/2013, 2014/2015), the Telkom Knockout three times (2007, 2010, 2011), the MTN8 twice (2008, 2014), and the Nedbank Cup once (2013).
