
Pretoria – The Republic of South Africa has expressed its deepest sympathies to the Islamic Republic of Iran following the devastating explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, located in southern Iran.
The significant blast on Saturday, (26 April 2025), is reported to have been triggered by the ignition of chemical substances, as per state media accounts.
In a statement released on Monday, (28 April 2025), the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) remarked: “The government of the Republic of South Africa extends its heartfelt condolences to the government and citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the aftermath of the tragic explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, which resulted in over 40 lives lost and left more than 1,000 individuals injured.”
The statement continued: “South Africa offers its sincere condolences to the families grieving their loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to those hurt, including individuals from numerous other nations.”
“We commend the efforts of emergency response teams and volunteers who are tirelessly assisting and supporting those affected, as well as the governments providing prompt aid.”
“We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Iran during this challenging time following this tragic event.”
