Is Ethereum Gaining Traction? BitMine’s Thomas Lee Acquires $1 Billion in ETH

After a prolonged phase of stagnation, Ethereum appears to be regaining its value. A key player in Ether’s market resurgence is Wall Street analyst Thomas Lee, who, following his appointment at Bitcoin mining firm BitMine, initiated an Ethereum treasury. Some refer to Lee as Ethereum’s potential rescuer. Who is he? Can he help Ethereum overcome its challenges?

Ethereum’s Advocate

Lee is a financial analyst, frequent commentator on CNBC, and the Chief Investment Officer at Fundstrat, a wealth management firm he co-founded.

With a background at JPMorgan, he is a familiar face in financial media.

What’s particularly noteworthy about Lee’s influence on Ethereum is his recent role as chairman of BitMine Immersion Technology, a publicly traded Bitcoin mining company. His arrival led the company to quickly launch a large-scale Ethereum treasury initiative, positioning Lee as a leader in this endeavor.

The announcement of Lee’s role and the Ethereum-centered strategy coincided with a phenomenal rise in BitMine’s stock (BMNR), which surged from $4 to $48 in just a few days, briefly exceeding the $160 mark on July 3.

With a strong standing on Wall Street as a notable cryptocurrency supporter, Lee’s management of an Ethereum treasury is seen as a potential driving force for ETH’s recovery.

$1 Billion in ETH in Just Seven Days

Lee seems to be following in the footsteps of MicroStrategy co-founder Michael Saylor, who accumulated over 600,000 bitcoins over five years, creating the largest BTC treasury in existence.

In comparison, Lee is turning his focus to ETH, which has now become the primary value indicator for BMNR.

In line with BitMine’s ambitions, the company acquired $1 billion worth of ETH in just seven days. Lee notes this contrasts with MicroStrategy’s $250 million Bitcoin purchase during the same timeframe.

BitMine aims to obtain approximately 6 million ETH from a total supply of 120.7 million. Achieving this would give BitMine a 5% stake in the network, making it the second-largest ETH holder (and staker) after Lido, which currently holds 9,100,000 ETH.

Numerous significant companies are pouring capital into BitMine, bolstering its ability to invest further in Ethereum. This list includes MOZAYYX, Pantera, FalconX, Kraken, and others.

Why Did Lee Choose Ethereum?

Bitcoin has earned a reputation as a long-term appreciating asset. Bitcoin enthusiasts often say, “No one ever lost money holding Bitcoin for four years.” Its scarcity and decentralization have made it a highly sought-after asset for corporations, nations, financial institutions, and retail investors.

In contrast, Ethereum presents a different story. While it has maintained its status as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization since inception, its price has struggled, especially relative to Bitcoin, and ongoing criticism has been directed at the pace of network upgrades. The Ethereum Foundation also came under scrutiny for selling Ethereum, and by 2024, Solana became a serious competitor.

Similar to Saylor’s early adoption of Bitcoin, Lee aims to be one of the first to accumulate Ethereum before it catches wider attention. The digital asset’s importance as a foundation for a vast stablecoin market, alongside the rising trend of tokenization, promises to enhance Ethereum’s standing. At present, it remains the leading platform for developing and hosting tokens.

Lee mentioned that stablecoins are experiencing a “ChatGPT moment” within the cryptocurrency space, fostering optimism that the viral nature of stablecoins will drive Ethereum’s growth. The GENIUS Act, signed by President Trump on July 18, along with Circle’s IPO, will aid the adoption and growth of stablecoins.

Moreover, Lee identifies the rising interest in stablecoins from Mastercard and various banks as catalysts for Ethereum. In a CNBC interview on June 30, he expressed:

“When Goldman issues a stablecoin and JPMorgan utilizes Ethereum as a layer one blockchain, they will likely want to secure it by staking Ethereum. Therefore, we aim to position ourselves strategically by creating a treasury.”

Lee also pointed out that stablecoins hold the world’s 12th-largest treasury, with expectations that they will ultimately become the largest holder, serving as a mechanism to uphold the USD’s global dominance. He believes that the expanding stablecoin market will generate substantial transaction fees for his enterprise.

It’s noteworthy that Lee is not the only influential figure associated with BitMine. An announcement on July 16 revealed that billionaire Peter Thiel, co-founder of Palantir and PayPal, holds a 9% stake in BitMine. Several other Ethereum treasuries have already come into existence, and inflows into Ethereum ETFs are on the rise.

The Future of Ethereum

Overall, attributing Ether’s recovery solely to Lee would be misleading, just as it would be inaccurate to credit Bitcoin’s ascent to Michael Saylor alone, considering the involvement of major players like BlackRock. Thus, Lee is more of an “advocate for Ethereum” rather than its “savior.”

Whether Lee’s investment in Ethereum will succeed remains uncertain; while he has made accurate predictions in the past, only time will determine if his confidence in Ether is justified.
