Water Shortages Strike Soshanguve: City of Tshwane Cautions Against Possible Decline

Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has issued a warning indicating that additional taps in Soshanguve may run dry if residents fail to conserve the available water.

“The Soshanguve L Reservoirs are experiencing extremely high water consumption levels, which puts a larger area of Soshanguve at risk of potential water shortages in the coming days,” the City cautioned over the weekend.

“Even with a sufficient supply from the Rand Water supply line, the reservoir levels are struggling to surpass 30%.”

“These alarmingly low levels are hindering city technicians from pumping water to the Soshanguve L Tower zone, which services Block L, M, K, alongside LKK schools and a clinic.”

The City noted that these areas have been without water since Friday, 1 August 2025, “due to the dwindling water levels in the Soshanguve L Reservoirs.”

In a statement released on Sunday, 3 August 2025, the City commented: “Yesterday, the team made significant reductions to the flow from the reservoirs to assist in their recovery; however, levels have only increased by 8% as of this morning.”

The City further added: “To mitigate this ongoing critical decline, city technicians may be compelled to implement stringent measures, including a temporary suspension of water supply to the wider Soshanguve area to allow the reservoir to recover adequately for pumping to the Tower zone.”

“These drastic measures can be averted if customers receiving water from the Soshanguve L Reservoirs can reduce their usage, enabling the reservoir levels to rise to at least 60%.”

The City urges residents of Soshanguve who still have access to water to conserve it, aiding the city’s efforts to restore water supply to the impacted areas.
