Ouaddou Emphasizes the Need for a Strong Team to Compete Effectively at All Levels

Orlando Pirates’ head coach Abdelsam Ouaddou highlights the significance of fostering a cohesive and resilient team to achieve success in major tournaments, particularly as the Soweto club navigates the PSL, CAF Champions League, and local cup contests.

Recently, the Buccaneers successfully defended their MTN8 title and moved up to third place in the Betway Premiership after a commanding 2-0 win against TS Galaxy at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

As it stands, Pirates have earned 15 points from seven games, trailing Mamelodi Sundowns by six points, with the defending champions having played three additional matches. They are also five points behind Sekhukhune United, who have played two more games.

On the continental stage, Pirates progressed to the second round of the CAF Champions League, dominating Lesotho’s Lioli with a 7-0 aggregate score, allowing Ouaddou the opportunity to refine his team.

Looking forward, the Buccaneers are gearing up for the Carling Knockout round of 16, where they will host Siwelele at Orlando Stadium this Saturday (15:00).

Since taking over as head coach of Pirates in the offseason, Ouaddou has placed a strong emphasis on the importance of team depth and unity.

“Winning requires more than just 11 players; having a united team is essential to clinching the league title and performing well in major tournaments,” stated Ouaddou.

“Furthermore, when I join a new club, my initial focus isn’t so much on tactics, but on instilling core values. These values create a solid foundation for all endeavors. Without them, any initiative risks losing momentum as the season progresses.”

With a packed schedule ahead, Ouaddou believes that the Buccaneers’ success hinges on their collective mindset, physical condition, and discipline as they strive to compete with Sundowns for league honors while also aiming to make their mark in Africa.
