Johannesburg – The beleaguered head of the Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness, Lesiba Arnold Malotana, has been suspended.
“Gauteng Premier Mr. Panyaza Lesufi has placed Mr. Lesiba Arnold Malotana, Head of the Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness, on immediate suspension,” the department announced on Tuesday, 14 October 2025.
While the statement did not outline the reasons for Malotana’s suspension, it follows a call from Democratic Alliance shadow MEC for Health, Jack Bloom, urging Premier Lesufi to take action against him after the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) announced an investigation into two dubious tenders.
Malotana, along with two other executives from the department, is accused of manipulating supply chain processes to benefit BAS Med.
The trio allegedly received kickbacks exceeding R10 million.
The allegations first emerged in April 2023.
The department’s statement also mentioned: “The Premier has appointed Dr. Darion Barclay as the Acting Head of the Department of Health and Wellness.”
Dr. Barclay currently manages the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).
The statement stressed that Dr. Barclay’s appointment will “ensure stability and continuity” within this vital department.
The department highlighted that Dr. Barclay’s role is essential for seamless service delivery.
The Gauteng Provincial Government reiterated its unwavering support for the SIU’s efforts and other law enforcement agencies.
“We remain dedicated to eradicating maladministration and maintaining the highest standards of accountability and ethical leadership,” stated the Gauteng Provincial Government.
