Ethereum Targets Improved Speed and Security in Finality with Minimmut

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is backing a controversial shift from Casper FFG to Minimmit, asserting that enhancing censorship resistance is more vital than maintaining traditional fault tolerance as ETH approaches the $2,000 milestone.

Summary

  • Vitalik proposes replacing Ethereum’s two-round Casper FFG finality gadget with Minimmit, which can finalize blocks in a single round.
  • The trade-off: fault tolerance decreases from 33% to 17%, but there are perceived improvements in censorship resistance and the ability to recover from bugs or attacks.
  • This discussion is taking place as ETH stabilizes around $2,000, with markets evaluating whether quicker, stronger finality can command a premium in volatile macro conditions.

Vitalik Buterin has endorsed one of the most significant changes to Ethereum’s (ETH) architecture: substituting the Casper FFG finality gadget with Minimmit, a one-round Byzantine fault-tolerant scheme that purposefully relaxes certain purity-theory guarantees for what he describes as more “real-world” safety.

Currently, Casper requires validators to provide two attestations — one to “justify” a block and another to “finalize” it — while it can tolerate up to 33% of the stake behaving maliciously before the system’s guarantees fail. Minimmit simplifies this process to a single round: faster and easier, but with formal fault tolerance reducing to 17% under the presently proposed parameters.

One crucial technical detail I neglected to mention is the proposed transition from Casper FFG to Minimmit as the finality gadget. To summarize, Casper FFG provides two-round finality: it requires each attester to sign once to “justify” the block, and then again to “finalize” it.… https://t.co/94nK7VXmp5 — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) March 6, 2026

On the surface, this may seem like a downgrade. However, Buterin’s argument is persuasive: the most critical real-world risk is not finality reversion but rather censorship. Finality reversion leads to clear cryptographic proof and triggers substantial slashing — potentially resulting in millions of ETH, or billions of dollars, disappearing on-chain — making such attacks economically irrational for any prudent investor with that level of capital. In contrast, censorship presents complexities: it compels users and developers into social coordination, soft forks, and political disputes. In both the “ideal” three-slot-finality (3SF) model and Minimmit, an attacker needs 50% of the stake to engage in censorship. However, Minimmit modifies the thresholds at which an attacker can finalize incorrect history, increasing that requirement from 67% to 83%. Buterin argues that this maximizes the instances where the network defaults to “two chains dueling” rather than “the wrong thing being finalized” — a situation that, while chaotic, is correctable.

The context is a market no longer driven solely by narratives. ETH is currently valued at around $2,000, down from previous cycle peaks near $4,900, amidst heightened volatility and ongoing macro challenges. Traders have already glimpsed Ethereum’s “fast L1” roadmap, which aims to reduce slot times from 12 seconds to as little as 2 seconds, and slashes finality down to single-digit seconds using Minimmit. If this redesign holds, Ethereum will not only compete in terms of the rollup ecosystem and DeFi liquidity but will also contend with something fundamentally simple: the speed and reliability of making transactions irreversible. In a market where ETH is still recalibrating its position against L2s and competing L1s, Minimmit signifies more than just a consensus change; it aims to realign the asset’s value with tangible, observable user experience: click, confirm, done.
