Pretoria – Mogaile Mogashoa, one of the three individuals facing defamation charges from the University of South Africa (UNISA), has been arrested and is currently incarcerated for contempt of court due to breaching an order that barred him from spreading false information about the university.
Last month, UNISA won a defamation lawsuit against Mogashoa, Mandisa Mashego, and Simamkele Xani, who were found guilty of disseminating inaccuracies regarding the institution, its Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Puleng LenkaBula, the Executive Director of Facilities Management, Feresane Sibeko, and other officials.
UNISA specifically argued in court that Mogashoa had repeatedly “spread lies” about the university’s management, including the Principal and Vice-Chancellor.
Among the false claims he made were that UNISA was a “cooldrink place” (a term implying bribery) and that the principal and vice-chancellor were illicitly transferring funds from South Africa to Lesotho.
The university successfully filed a defamation claim and secured an injunction against him and the others – Mashego and Xani – to prevent them from perpetuating falsehoods about UNISA and its officials.

However, Mogashoa disregarded the order by continuing to spread further falsehoods, leading the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.
In a statement regarding Mogashoa’s situation on Friday, 6 March 2026, UNISA noted: “The university acknowledges the recent news that Mr. Mogashoa has been detained and is currently undergoing a six-month prison sentence.”
