Gaborone – The Government of Botswana mourns the loss of former Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service, Simon Adolf Hirschfeld, who became the first Motswana to lead the police force after independence.
Hirschfeld passed away on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at the age of 90. Details regarding the circumstances of his death have yet to be revealed.
He wrapped up his service in July 1995 after an exemplary 24-year tenure as Commissioner, marking nearly four decades in law enforcement.
The Minister for State President, Defence and Security, Moeti Mohwasa, conveyed sincere condolences to Hirschfeld’s family, the Botswana Police Service, his friends, and the broader community.
“It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of national loss that I address you today regarding the passing of an extraordinary son of Botswana, former Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service, Mr. Adolf Hirschfeld,” stated Mohwasa.
He described Hirschfeld as a committed and principled leader who executed his responsibilities with remarkable capability.
“The loss of Mr. Hirschfeld marks the end of an important chapter in the history of our national security,” noted Mohwasa.
“During an impressive 39-year and 9-month career, he rose through the ranks demonstrating professionalism and unwavering commitment, retiring on 31 July 1995 as the Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service.”
Hirschfeld is set to be laid to rest in Gaborone on Tuesday, 9 June 2026.
