Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have shown their support for the apprehension of Yusuf Omar, owner of Omar’s Motor Den CC in Witbank, Mpumalanga, for contempt of court linked to the looting incident at Tembisa Hospital.
On Friday, 5 June 2026, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) enforced contempt and seizure orders against Omar Motor Den for selling a Bentley connected to notable businessman Hangwani Maumela.
Maumela faces charges of misappropriating over R816 million through fraudulent contracts linked to Tembisa Hospital, part of a larger R2 billion corruption scheme.
This fraudulent operation allegedly involved fake suppliers, split tenders, and front companies, diverting healthcare funds towards luxury vehicles, real estate, and personal gain.
The SIU clarified that the court order against Omar relates to a Special Tribunal directive dated 29 September 2025, aiming to secure all assets associated with Hangwani Maumela in the Tembisa Hospital case.
During the enforcement of this order, Omar was detained for allegedly impeding and not cooperating with the SIU and South African Police Service personnel.
After about an hour, Omar was released from a police vehicle with the stipulation that he would assist the authorities, including providing CCTV footage of the vehicles at his dealership.
In response to this high-profile arrest, EFF stated it “endorses the confiscation of properties and luxury assets tied to Hangwani Maumela as part of the ongoing inquiry into the misuse of public funds at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital.”
“This is a crucial step toward accountability, reaffirming the EFF’s long-standing position that those benefiting from the misappropriation of public resources should face legal consequences.”
The EFF has continually condemned the widespread looting at Tembisa Hospital and has persistently called for the prosecution of everyone involved in the diversion of funds meant for healthcare.
“We assert that the deterioration of public healthcare infrastructure is not a coincidence but directly linked to corruption, political protection, and criminal networks operating within the government.
“Nevertheless, asset seizures must be followed by successful prosecutions and the recovery of all misappropriated funds.”
The EFF also reiterates its call for justice for the murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran and all others who have exposed corruption in the health sector.
