Cape Town – The path to the Growthpoint SA Nationals begins from June 19 to 21, as South Africa’s leading squash athletes vie for their places in the nation’s top championship through eight regional qualifying events.
These competitions, taking place at various venues throughout South Africa, will determine which eight men and women will advance to the Growthpoint SA Nationals, scheduled for August 20 to 22 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
While the top seeds are expected to progress, the unpredictable nature of elite sports means that anything can happen.
The regional qualifiers have consistently provided exhilarating matches, and this year’s events are anticipated to continue that tradition.
In the men’s division, reigning champion Dewald van Niekerk is the prominent player to watch.
The Gqeberha local has maintained a stronghold in national squash since securing his first title in 2021 and aims for an impressive sixth consecutive win.
While few have been able to significantly challenge Van Niekerk’s dominance, Pretoria’s Groenewald brothers, Damian and Luhann, are eager to bridge the gap.
Damian has been the runner-up to Van Niekerk for the past two years and has sharpened his skills by competing in the newly introduced Assore PSA series.
This additional competitive experience may set the stage for a breakthrough season.
Meanwhile, Luhann is honing his skills while studying in the United States.
As one of the nation’s most promising young athletes, he is keen to test his development against South Africa’s top players.
The women’s tournament appears more open with the absence of six-time champion Alex Commins, paving the way for a new contender to emerge.
Eastern Province’s Hayley Ward has emerged as a key contender after finishing as the runner-up to Commins in the last two competitions.
Since turning professional in 2022, Ward has claimed three international PSA titles and is determined to turn her experience into national success.
However, she faces stiff competition ahead.
Former champions Lizelle Muller and Milnay Louw are still formidable challengers, while Helena Hudson from Northerns has shone in the Assore tournaments, reaching several finals and adapting well against elite opponents.
With national qualification on the line, the regional qualifiers are poised to deliver three days of thrilling matches as the nation’s top athletes embark on their quest for glory at the Growthpoint SA Nationals.
