Bio Protocol Launches AI Research Hub to Transform Grant Accessibility

Bio Protocol has launched OpenLabs, a pioneering platform that combines AI-enhanced research development, community funding, and on-chain governance, successfully raising over $33 million within its ecosystem.

Summary

  • Bio Protocol has rolled out OpenLabs, unifying AI-assisted research development with community collaboration and funding.
  • Researchers can access funding through community votes, and BIO token holders will play pivotal roles in governance decisions.
  • Bio Protocol announced that its BIO Genesis initiative has successfully gathered over $33 million to promote decentralized scientific projects.

According to Bio Protocol, OpenLabs was officially launched on June 19 during DeSci.Berlin 2026, an event conducted at KÖNIG GALERIE as part of Berlin Blockchain Week.

The initiative highlighted that OpenLabs is designed for researchers to innovate scientific ideas, connect with contributors, and secure funding—all through a single interface. This streamlines processes previously requiring multiple grant applications, governance tools, and collaboration platforms.

During the event, Bio Protocol presented OpenLabs as a viable alternative to conventional research funding pathways, which often include cumbersome review processes and institutional oversight. The initiative empowers community members to vote on research proposals while AI-supported workflows assist researchers in developing and fine-tuning their projects.

Despite the launch, the value of Bio Protocol (BIO) declined, following general trends in the crypto market. The token fell by over 8% within 24 hours as investors reacted to the hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and the uncertainties regarding the proposed U.S.-Iran peace initiative.

OpenLabs combines research synergy with funding decisions

According to the model presented by Bio Protocol, researchers and community members collaborate on the same platform, where both project development and funding decisions are made. The BIO token functions as the governance and utility asset facilitating voting and participation within the ecosystem.

During the launch, Bio Protocol spotlighted two key projects: RheumaAI, an AI agent tailored for rheumatology research, and PeptAI, emphasizing peptide discovery.

The project claims that OpenLabs incorporates AI-driven techniques into scientific collaboration and invites token holders and community participants to engage in funding decisions. Rather than relying solely on traditional grant committees, project proposals can gain traction via the community governance mechanisms built into the platform.

DeSci.Berlin has historically been a significant venue for decentralized science initiatives, with Bio Protocol noting that previous editions of the conference have been instrumental in the development of projects like Molecule Labs.

Bio Protocol strengthens its decentralized science framework

OpenLabs is a vital part of Bio Protocol’s broader strategy in decentralized science. The project is focused on building infrastructure that utilizes tokenized intellectual property and BioDAOs to direct funding towards biotechnology and scientific research ventures.

Bio Protocol reported that its BIO Genesis initiative has accumulated more than $33 million to date. This initiative aims to support research-centric organizations that function within its ecosystem.

Bio Protocol’s engagement with AI research tools predates the OpenLabs launch. In August 2025, the project initiated the Ignition Sale for Aubrai, a decentralized BioAgent developed with VitaDAO for longevity research. Bio Protocol asserts that Aubrai functions as an on-chain AI co-scientist, capable of generating hypotheses and assisting in the design of laboratory experiments.

Bio Protocol contends that the decentralized science field aims to leverage blockchain technology to improve research funding, governance, and intellectual property management. Advocates of this approach argue that transparent funding mechanisms and community engagement can provide alternatives to traditional research financing models.

However, ongoing regulatory challenges loom as these models advance. The intersection of tokenized intellectual property with biotechnology projects raises complex questions related to securities regulations, patent laws, and the oversight requirements of pharmaceuticals.

As research initiatives transition from initial ideas to commercial viability, the legal and compliance environment may grow increasingly intricate for projects operating in the decentralized science landscape.
