Polokwane – Authorities have successfully recovered a stolen Toyota Hilux Legend Edition double cab bakkie, valued at R700 000, and apprehended a 45-year-old driver during an anti-smuggling operation.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the suspect was taken into custody on Friday, 19 June 2026, along the N1 South highway just outside Polokwane.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba disclosed that intelligence regarding the smuggling of high-end stolen vehicles out of South Africa into neighboring countries played a crucial role in the arrest and recovery of the Toyota bakkie.
“Information indicated that the bakkie was being transferred from Gauteng province to Limpopo province, with the intention of smuggling it through Beitbridge Port of Entry,” stated the police spokesperson.
The anti-smuggling initiative involved the Provincial Tracking Team and Provincial Investigation Unit, aided by CAP Specialized, Tracker Connect, Insurance Crime Bureau, Tshimollo Security and Investigation, and Shadow Secure Security.
The stolen vehicle was spotted speeding along the N1 South, near the Shell Ultra City filling station, where it was subsequently stopped.
Initial investigations revealed that the double cab had been reported stolen at the Loate Police Station in Tshwane.
The driver, aged 45, was arrested at the scene and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the operational teams for successfully executing the arrest and recovering the bakkie.
“This recovery underscores the successes achievable through intelligence-driven operations and strong collaboration between law enforcement and private security organizations,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
“We will continue to target cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates to ensure stolen vehicles are reclaimed and those responsible are held accountable,” she concluded.
The suspect is set to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June 2026, facing charges related to the possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
Investigations by the police are ongoing.
