Australia and Paraguay are about to face off in a crucial match for the second and final automatic knockout slot.

Both nations are currently tied on points; however, the Socceroos have a superior goal difference, meaning they will progress if the game ends in a draw.

Should Paraguay lose or only draw against Australia, they could still qualify as one of the best eight third-placed teams.

If two or more teams finish with the same number of points, the following tiebreaking criteria will be applied in this order:

  1. Points from matches between the tied teams
  2. Goal difference in those matches
  3. Total goals scored in those matches
  4. Overall goal difference in all group matches
  5. Total goals scored across all group matches
  6. Fair play score based on yellow and red cards
  7. FIFA World Ranking

Criteria for Selection of the Best Eight Third-Placed Teams

The teams finishing third in their groups will be ranked based on the following criteria:

  1. Points
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Fair play score relating to yellow and red cards
  5. FIFA World Ranking
