Polokwane – A police sergeant tragically took the lives of two family members and left two others injured before ending his own life in an incident that has deeply affected Tayereni Village, Dennilton, Sekhukhune District, Limpopo, over the weekend.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, this violent event unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, 27 June 2026.
“Two family members lost their lives, and two others sustained serious injuries, after which the suspect reportedly took his own life,” stated the police spokesperson.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the 52-year-old police sergeant from Soshanguve, Gauteng, had been involved in an argument with his wife prior to the incident.
“It is alleged that following a dispute in Soshanguve, the wife took refuge at her parents’ house in Tayereni Village, accompanied by her mother to Limpopo,” explained Colonel Ledwaba.
“The suspect is said to have arrived at the home around 01:00 and opened fire, tragically resulting in the deaths of his 68-year-old mother-in-law and 29-year-old stepson.
“He also shot and injured his 46-year-old wife and their 14-year-old daughter.”
“The injured family members managed to flee the scene and were transported to a local hospital for medical attention.”
Authorities quickly launched a manhunt for the suspect, who was later found at his residence in Dennilton.
“As police sought to apprehend him, the suspect allegedly shot himself and died at the scene,” reported Colonel Ledwaba.
“It is not yet clear whether the firearm used was a service weapon from the South African Police Service or a private firearm, as the deceased was reportedly in possession of both.”
Two firearms and ammunition have been confiscated for forensic examination.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is leading the investigation.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the outgoing Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, expressed sincere condolences to the grieving family and extended wishes for a quick recovery to those injured.
“This is an extremely distressing and tragic event that has taken loved ones from a family,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
“We strongly denounce this senseless act of violence. No conflict or domestic issue should ever escalate to such a loss of life.
“We encourage anyone facing domestic violence to seek assistance before situations spiral into irreversible tragedies.”
