Nicolas Otamendi from Argentina has openly criticized Rodri of Spain, referring to him as an “idiot” after the conclusion of the World Cup final.
In the match on Sunday, Lionel Messi and his teammates lost their title, with a 1-0 defeat against the European champions at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The Albiceleste struggled significantly, managing only two attempts—both off target—over the course of 120 minutes, and losing Enzo Fernandez to a second yellow card right before extra time.
As the match ended, tensions escalated, with Nahuel Molina involved in a scuffle with Rodri, while Leandro Paredes grabbed Spain’s Eric Garcia by the neck and brought down Gavi, ultimately receiving a red card.

Marca reports that Otamendi had a fiery confrontation with Rodri over comments made by Aymeric Laporte about Argentina and officiating in recent weeks.
The former Man City player, who was teammates with Rodri for a year at the Etihad before departing in 2020, took offense to Laporte’s “crying” and claims that Argentina received preferential refereeing.

Otamendi reportedly shouted: “Quit your complaining, idiot. You’ve been whining all week.”
“You and Laporte need to sort yourselves out. You have been moaning to the referees all week, my friend.”
Rodri appeared taken aback and asked for clarification regarding Otamendi’s remarks.
Otamendi replied: “Laporte. Did you not catch what he said this week?”

Laporte had pointed out several contentious calls during Argentina’s World Cup run.
Fans expressed outrage particularly following the Round of 16 match against Egypt, where a goal by Mostafa Ziko and a penalty against Mohamed Salah were not awarded.
Laporte stated: “I have no issues with physical play as long as it remains within the limits of the game. If the referee handles it properly, I have no complaints.
“Indeed, we’ve seen some peculiar moments lately that went unpunished.
“Especially with Argentina, a team known for conveying subtle messages through their physical play.
“Such conduct shouldn’t be tolerated, especially in a competition of this stature, as it can disrupt players’ balance.
“It is the referee’s duty to maintain control and ensure the match doesn’t spiral out of control.
“When a few players are allowed to act freely, chaos ensues. From the very start of the tournament, we have maintained fairness in this aspect.”
Laporte had previously played alongside both Otamendi and Rodri at Man City before leaving in 2023.
