JSC Reveals Shortlist for Court Vacancies and Invites Public Input

Johannesburg – The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has released a list of candidates shortlisted for various judicial roles and is inviting public feedback on these individuals.

This selection process began on 5 May, when the JSC announced in the media that it was seeking nominations for interested candidates to occupy positions across multiple courts.

Current vacancies are available at the Supreme Court of Appeal, Labour Court, Labour Appeal Court, Competition Appeal Court, Electoral Court, Land Court, and several divisions of the High Court, specifically in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu–Natal, and Northern Cape.

Nominations were due by 5 June 2026.

The JSC has identified the following candidates for interviews:

Supreme Court of Appeal (3 vacancies)

  • Judge Gerald Hercules Bloem
  • Judge Mokgere Busisiwe Shareen Masipa
  • Judge Ingrid Opperman
  • Judge Mmathebe Violet Phatshoane
  • Judge Esther Johanna Sophia Steyn

Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court (One vacancy – Deputy Judge President) Judge Betty Maletsatsi Mahalelo

  • Judge Graham Nasious Moshoana

Labour Appeal Court (2 vacancies)

“The shortlisted candidates will soon be notified about the venue, date, and time for their interviews,” the JSC confirmed.

Feedback regarding each candidate must be submitted on separate pages in both PDF and Word formats and should be submitted to the Secretariat by 11 September 2026.

Comments received after 11 September 2026 will not be considered.
